Sewing: a skill for life.

Sewing is a fundamental skill for life. In almost every household, the girl learnt from the mother and grandmother how to stitch. In the more affluent homes, girls were taught by the governess the more decorative arts of embroidery, tapestry and lace making for example, as a way to occupy their time. In poorer homes, villages and amongst indigenous peoples, sewing was and still is, how they made their clothes, the very fabric being made from the fleece of their animals and the fibres from plants. Dressmakers and seamstresses were from the so called lower classes. It was their life’s blood, their income and therefore a skill for life. Continue reading Sewing: a skill for life.

Festival Time

We have been keeping ourselves busy at the Wildly Created studio and having some fun along the way. These two top hats are now completed.
Inspired by a children’s book that we all know and love, this hat is the perfect fit for a festival. Here in our part of the world we have an annual Mad Hatters festival where the towns people turn out in all manner of headgear. This adult sized top hat features soft denim fabric and fleece fur with floppy bunny ears and tail. The brim is decorated with all manner of vegetables, a watering can, wheelbarrow, a small felt mouse and a white picket fence. A robin sits atop one of the ears. Hats like these are timeless like the books. Continue reading Festival Time

Onwards into 2022

January is already well behind us and it was a month filled with creativity. So often we think we have not achieved much when in hindsight that is rarely the case. 9 new silk scarves are now on their websites. 5 silk collage textiles are completed. Between myself and Emma we have also created 8 new hats with 5 more in production. The last week then has been spent doing photo shoots, editing, optimization and website listings for all the new pieces. I have 4 more new hats in the design stage and 3 cuffs. So it has been a busy start to the year. Continue reading Onwards into 2022

We chose the new moon of the 4th November as the day to publish and go live as we feel the energy of a new and building moon will give us and our site that same forward motion of growing and expanding energy. Pumpkins galore

house. I will miss the view of the sea, the freedom of rural living and the fresh produce from the land. Moving to the village will be a sea of change and make life easier on many levels. The sea is still only a short bike ride away and the native woods close by, nature is so important for me to refocus and reground. Continue reading Pumpkins galore

Wherever you lay your hat.

While the outdoors continues to draw me to explore and photograph, I am spending some time being creative at home. In a previous post I wrote about the hats we are creating and this is the one I made as a stand alone piece. I have a few others that are paired with a cuff. These hats and cuffs are handmade using traditional millinery techniques and are in silk and cotton.
These are some of the cuffs, I have hand dyed cotton lace and ribbons to match the silk ribbons. While many of my pieces are shabby chic, there are also cuffs in gothic blacks and reds, there will be bridal ones too. I can see young ladies at their graduations wearing them and elegant ladies at garden parties looking fabulous. Any occasion that calls for wearing a statement piece. Wildly Created

I have been super busy these last weeks and months diverting time to a collaboration between myself and my daughter. Her long time dream of creating one of a kind handmade hats and masques has become possible with all the at home time given to us during the pandemic. Combining our skills seemed the most beneficial route even though we didn’t know if we would be compatible creators. Seems we had no need to worry. Wildly Created will soon come online and our beautiful accessories will be available to browse and purchase. Exciting times. Continue reading Wildly Created
