Next Wednesday marks the end of a momentous event for me. The end of my solo textile art exhibition in our local library exhibition space. It started on March 28th and finishes on April 24th. Mixed media textile exhibitions are still a rare sight in Ireland, especially down in the South West and even more so, a solo one, so I am feeling very grateful to have the opportunity to show such a large body of work in such a public place.
The response, comments and feedback has been absolutely incredible. Visitors coming back several times to look more. People spending anything up to an hour looking.
“Breathtaking” ” Immersive” “Wow” “Beautiful” “Reconnecting” “Soul Food”
Sales are of course very much appreciated and so far there have been five.
ALL THINGS WILD
Over the last three years, a collection of wall art and decorative pieces has come together culminating in this enchanting exhibition.
Rebecca is absolutely thrilled and excited to be able to showcase a solo textile exhibition of this size. Her use of materials, many of which she sources locally, evolve to depict tactile landscapes and seascapes inspired by her love of the Irish countryside in the varying seasons. She has included several sculptural pieces which mirror her keen observation of all things wild and where her imagination and creativity collide.
Bio
Rebecca Powell
Born in the UK in 1962, Rebecca has lived in the south west of Ireland since 1990 with a few years spent in Morocco and Spain. Silk and wool feature predominantly in Rebecca’s work which along with other fibres and textiles she uses to create pieces both wearable and decorative.
In more recent years she has become more conscious of where her materials and resources are sourced. This has led Rebecca to look for natural and sustainable ways to add colour and design to her textiles. She buys raw fleeces from a West Cork farmer, wool from Irish woollen mills and local businesses. Seaweeds and mushrooms hold a fascination for her, not just to eat, but for dyeing and printing. Flowers, leaves, berries, twigs, seed heads, ferns and more also feature in her alchemical world along with rusty bits of metal. Rebecca is drawn to the idea that even when these have finished their life or life cycle, they continue to exist and are celebrated within her work. They also feature in her subject matter particularly in the silk and wool wall art pieces that grace these walls where creativity and imagination collide.
Her last solo exhibition “Temperate Zone” back in 2002 featured more than 20 soft pastel paintings hosted at Glebe Gallery, Baltimore and Rebecca is delighted to have the opportunity to hold this solo exhibition showcasing her textile work in the new Kinsale library.
“My passion for nature is the driving force, my sense of place, of connectedness and of wonder.”
All Things Wild celebrates her passion for the great outdoors, the Irish landscapes, treasures she finds out walking, nature’s bounty and a deep connection to all things wild.
